Leechburg contractor charged with home improvement fraud of Unity couple

A Leechburg contractor was charged with home improvement fraud this week following an investigation by Westmoreland County detectives.

Dawayne W. Redmond, 42, was charged with failing to perform a service after receiving payment in advance, according to court documents.

A Unity couple who hired Redmond to remodel the exterior of their home in August 2022 reported him to local authorities, according to a statement on the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office website. Detectives said Redmond provided a quote of more than $59,000 for the project and requested a deposit of $42,200.

The couple told detectives Redmond completed some of the work without obtaining required building permits from the township, the statement said, and the work he had completed did not pass township codes.

Detectives determined the couple was owed a refund of $26,602, the statement said, but Redmond refused to issue the refund. Redmond also failed to provide a completion date and insurance information, the statement said.

Redmond’s preliminary arraignment was scheduled for Thursday. His preliminary hearing will take place Dec. 11 before District Judge Tamara Mahady.
