SHEBOYGAN – The new year could bring new stores, community projects and housing to the Sheboygan area.
Here’s a rundown of some developments to expect in 2024.
Olive Garden could be ready by the end of the month
Olive Garden is expected to open in the town of Sheboygan at the end of January, according to developers. The restaurant broke ground in April 2023.
A Michaels craft store will replace OfficeMax on Kohler Memorial Drive, following its closure in December. The new store could open in the summer, according to a company spokesperson.
New community projects include a splash pad and pickleball courts
The city is working to add a splash pad at Cleveland Park, budgeted for about $240,000 with Buteyn-Peterson Construction Company, Inc. The project is contracted until June. Sheboygan has splash pads at Optimist, End and Workers Water Street parks.
Sheboygan is also working with Buteyn-Peterson Construction Co. to build six pickleball courts at Kiwanis Park. The project is estimated at about $314,730, with city funds allocated from Capital Projects and Community Development Block Grant funds. It could be done by the end of June, too.

Alliant Energy is working to build a battery energy storage system near the Edgewater Generating Station, following city and Public Service Commission of Wisconsin approval, according to a company spokesperson.
The 99-megawatt BESS could power more than 100,000 homes for a four-hour period, after the Edgewater plant retires in 2025. Construction could start in the second half of the year.
Apartment buildings underway to address housing shortage
Several housing projects were launched last year, with anticipated completion dates for 2024.
Gateway Apartments, a project led by Partners for Community Development and Abacus Architects, could bring 44 affordable apartment units to Sheboygan. The $9.85 million project could finish by the end of 2024 at the earliest, according to a conditional use permit application.
Two more apartment projects near Indiana Avenue — View 14 and Berkshire apartments — could also finish this year. View 14 Apartments will bring a mix of 48 market rate and affordable units, with one-, two- and three-bedroom options. It could be done by summer. A combined 101 apartments and townhome units will be offered at Berkshire Apartments, expected to take at most 14 months to complete.
Redevelopment of the former Sheboygan Press building, 632 Center Ave., could finish this year, too, offering a mix of 28 one- and two-bedroom apartments. Construction is on track to begin leasing early this year, according to a developer.
The first housing developments in Van Horn’s North Town could finish by the fall, bringing 170 rental units combined in three-story and four-story buildings. The four-story building will also offer commercial space.

A new hotel and manufacturing facility on the horizon
A 90-room Home2 Suites by Hilton will also be completed at the North Town development by summer.
American Orthodontics’ second facility in Wisconsin, this one in Saukville, could open by the middle of the year and create at least 180 jobs. The 129,025-square-foot manufacturing building could cost about $20 million.
