5 Ways to Elevate Your Living Room

Every interior is unique, but there are a few tried-and-true tactics that can work wonders to elevate the look and feel of any space. Just ask Marni Sugerman, a designer with Decorating Den Interiors, a network of individually owned and operated interior design franchises throughout the U.S. and Canada. While her projects range from family homes and empty-nester condos in Westchester, New York, to warm weather escapes in Boca Raton, there are a few common threads throughout.

“One of the techniques I use in all of my designs is layering of textures to add interest, volume, and beauty to the room,” Sugerman shared during a recent tour of a project in New Rochelle, New York. In the living room of that home, showcased in the video above, Sugerman paired woven grasscloth wallpaper with a carved French gray credenza and velvet upholstery with silver nailheads for a warm and sophisticated mix.

Another go-to trick? Making the windows a “wow” factor with customized treatments. The New Rochelle home features a wall of windows overlooking the Long Island Sound, so she opted for motorized solar shades that make it easy to showcase the view or adjust the light level. She also “added elegant draperies from ceiling to floor to accentuate the high ceilings,” she said. The embroidered fabric, with gray, gold, and blue to complement the other material in the room, adds another layer of texture.
