Tim Allen talks possible ‘Home Improvement’ spinoff or reboot

Uuueeegh? A Home Improvement spinoff?

Tim Allen suggested that it’s a possibility in a new interview. While nothing official is in the works, ideas have been thrown around between original cast members.

“I see Richard Karn a lot,” Allen told The Messenger. “And I talk to the boys [Zachery Ty Bryan, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, and Taran Noah Smith, who played Allen’s kids on the show]… and I’m there as one of their friends. We keep talking about [a spinoff].”

Allen’s vision of what that might look like takes a lesson from the formula that worked for the Full House spinoff, Fuller House. “It’s funny, one of the conversations we’ve had recently is how weird it would be if Home Improvement would be about the kids’ kids,” Allen said. “Like if all of them had children, and I’m a grandparent. Home Re-Improvement or something like that. It’s come up.”

This isn’t the first time Allen has discussed bringing Home Improvement back from the scrapyard. In 2018, he told Entertainment Tonight that he was “very interested” in reviving the show. “I can’t say everybody, but it has been floated,” Allen said. “And more than I would have expected said, ‘Yeah, that would be cool to do it years later,’ like Roseanne.”

That same year, he told E! News he’d love to return to that world to focus on the kids. “I never felt… that this was done,” Allen said. “It never felt right. In the time off, we got real close, where we talked to everybody.”

The original show ran for eight seasons on ABC, starting in 1991. If it happened, it would be far from the first sitcom of its era to get the reboot or spinoff treatment, with shows like Roseanne, Will & Grace, Saved by the Bell, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air getting a second life in recent years. It remains to be seen if, inside the world of Home Improvement, Tool Time will get its own reboot. Al Borland fans are waiting.
